Chapter Eleven

The Lion Head

The next morning Billy sat on the wall waiting for Ricky. He went over and over what Amy had said, “If it hadn’t been for you.” How did I help her? Unless she heard my thoughts. Nah, it’s just her imagination. I didn’t do anything. Billy yawned and looked up at the school’s roof shining in the sun. A small group of crows cawed as they flew off the bell tower and landed in the tall oak tree above him, welcoming him back.

“How are you doing?” Ricky asked as he came up the sidewalk.

Billy turned around. “Okay, I guess,” he answered. “Do you think I helped Amy last night?”

“No. How could you? You don’t know magic.”

“I guess so, but I was trying to help her.”

“So was I, dude, but it doesn’t mean we did anything.”

“But, she said I did.”

“Forget about it. Are you ready for Halloween?”

Billy nodded and listened to the birds chirping. “Do you think she’s okay?”

“I don’t know, but I bet that spirit is mad after last night. I wonder if he gets stronger around Halloween.”

“Yeah, probably.” Billy still worried about Amy. “Too bad we screwed up the ritual.”

“We didn’t screw it up.” Ricky shook the chain-link fence. “Amy did. She’s the one who screwed up.”

“But we did it together.”

“Yeah so, thanks to her, Mr. Evil is even more pissed off with us.”

Billy’s anger flared. “She tried her best. Stop blaming it all on her.”

“But it was her idea and she said she could do it.”

“I wish we had some way of going back to Amy’s time to find out if she’s okay.”

“What?” Ricky grabbed the fence again. “I don’t think so. That’s what made it worse to begin with, remember?”

“I know. I’d just like to know how she’s doing.”

“After that shot she took she might be seriously hurt, maybe in the hospital.”

“I hope not. She tried so hard to defeat him,” Billy said, tears welling up.

Ricky sighed. “Yeah, well, she didn’t and it didn’t help, did it.”

Billy scowled. “At least she tried.”

“She shouldn’t have offered if she couldn’t do it.”

“Okay, I get it,” Billy said sharply, “but I’d still like to go back to see her somehow.”

“But how?” Ricky scoffed. “We don’t have an ocular orb.”

“I know, but we still need to find out why the spirit is after us.”

“You girls waiting for the bell?” Andrew asked from behind them.

Billy hopped off the wall and Ricky spun around. Andrew and Damen stood with their hands in their pockets.

“What’s it to you?” Ricky asked, stepping forward.

“Get out of my face, dick.” Andrew shoved him backward. Damen snickered as Ricky bounced against the fence and stepped forward with clenched fists.

“Give it a rest, Andrew.” Billy held Ricky back. “Another fight and you’ll be suspended for a month.”

“I don’t give a—” Andrew started, but before he could finish, a soccer ball bounced off his back.

“Whoops, sorry man,” a boy said from behind. “You guys want to play a game?” It was Jonathon from their class. Three other boys flanked him.
